Avebury in Wiltshire

The village of Avebury is full of prehistoric monuments. Firstly, a huge stone circle surrounds it. Located north of the more famous Stonehenge, Avebury is just as intriguing. On the western side of the ring, there is the Alexander Keiller Museum, which has an overview of the site, as well as displayed excavated materials and other interesting information. Also to be found at Avebury is the West Kennet Long Barrow, perhaps the best example of a Neolithic burial site in the world. One of the more mysterious monuments is Silbury Hill, which stands 130 feet tall. This large mound of earth’s purpose is not known, but it is thought to be a burial mound.
