Skelmersdale in Avon

Once an old coal mining village, Skelmersdale became a “new town” in the 1960’s. Skelmersday possesses a history dating back from 55 BC when Roman soldiers used the area as a place to rest and recuperate during their journey from Wigan to harbor at Crosby. The Domesday Book of 1066 relays the town’s ancient past. Now a modern town, Skelmersdale features the Concourse shopping development and new estates. The Tand Valley Park encompasses the area where the Ribble Estuary meets the River Douglas. This picturesque park boasts two miles of lush landscape with plenty of wildlife. Also in the town, Beacon County Park offers stunning surroundings where visitors can enjoy a swimming pool, an 18-hole golf course and a driving range. The park also has an informative visitors’ center.
