Gosport in Hampshire

Gosport can be found on the south coast of England across the bay from Portsmouth. It is first mentioned about 1086 when it provided haven to the Bishop of Winchester on being rescued from the Solent. Originally a fishing village the town developed over the centuries into a garrison to protect the inland from invasion from the likes of Napolean and Hitler. It later became well known for boat building and supplying quality yachts and today one can see a number of historic buildings such as Haslar Hospital, the town’s maritime links, the peninsula, the esplanade and views across to the Isle of Wight. It takes about 10 minutes by ferry across the bay to Portsmouth and about an half hour or so to the Isle of Wight.
