Aldwych Theatre

Designed in by W G R Sprague (as was its twin The Strand on the opposite corner) the present theatre opened in 1905. For a time during the First World War the theatre was used as a club for Australian servicemen. Once known as the home of farce, the Aldwych was acquired in 1960 by the expanding Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company of Stratford (later to be renamed the Royal Shakespeare Company) who were then looking for a London home. Since the relocation of the RSC to the newly-built Babican in 1982, the theatre has staged a number of musicals and plays.
