This is situated at 1 Clink Street and is one of four similar museums in London. It is on the site of the original prison which dates back to the twelfth century and is possibly the oldest prison in the country. The prison was owned by successive Bishops of Winchester and known as “The Clink” from about the 15th century. It was demolished in 1780 but it was home to prostitutes and their clients, political prisoners, heretics, and from the 17th century it served as a debtors prison. The museum shows reconstructions of cell interiors together with a display of original and reproduction instruments of torture.
