Whitehall Palace

In 1529 York Place (the London residence of the Bishops of York) was confiscated by Henry VIII who chose it as his place of residence. The house was greatly extended and rebuilt by him stretching up to Westminster Hall and eventually becoming the largest palace in Europe. It remained the main Royal residence until 1698 when most of it was destroyed by fire although by this time the then reigning monarch William III had already vacated the palace due to his asthma. Remarkably the Banqueting House which had been built in 1622 by Inigo Jones escaped undamaged by the fire. This building is held to be the first in England to be built in the Classical style and has what is considered the most splendid room in England. This is the Saloon Room the ceiling of which was painted by Rubens in 1635. The Banqueting House may close at short notice for Government functions.
