Garrick Theatre

Designed in 1889 by Emden and Phipps and named for David Garrick the great 18th century actor, the Garrick has long been associated with farce and comedy. Notable successes have included: A Pair Of Spectacles, The Merry Wives Of Windsor, Love On the Dole, Fings Ain't Wot They Used T Be, and No Sex Please, We're British. Comedy continued off-stage when Bouncer, the theatre cats, was named as a shareholder. In company with a number of other London theatres, the Garrick is said to have a resident ghost. Early this century the theatre's lessee had an apartment at the top of a flight of stairs which led directly from the stage. His ghost is said to sometimes descend this phantom staircase to give actors a good-luck pat on the shoulder.
