Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill Carnival started as a response to race riots that had taken place in the area in the 1950's. The first Carnival was held in 1964 and was a great success. The Carnival has been said to be as good as Mardi Gras and it attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators. Sunday is designated Childrens Day and the Monday for adults. As with any very busy place, the normal safety precautions should be taken as it is a haven for pickpockets. The route of the Carnival is three miles long and there are many other events in the area. Most notable are the brightly decorated floats and the steel bands.
