National Portrait Gallery

Situated in the Patent Office Building it houses a vast collection of some 10000 portraits mainly of Britons who have figured prominently throughout British history. Whilst the vast majority of the portraits are paintings some are drawings photographs and there are even some busts on display. Here you will see portraits ranging from the 15th century – 21st century including those of Elizabeth 1, Henry VIII, James I and William Shakespeare as well as Somerset Maughan, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher. Although admission is free, there may be a charge for some special exhibitions.
