Cenotaph

Located in Whitehall, this is a grand memorial to those Commonwealth citizens who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1919 as a temporary structure but was completed in marble in 1920 for commemoration of the Armistice. On Remembrance Sunday, the Sunday closest to November 11, wreaths are laid at the Cenotaph by the Queen and Prime Minister. The Cenotaph means ‘empty tomb’. Apart from the sculpted flags of the three branches of military service and the Merchant Navy and the words "The Glorious Dead" there are no other inscriptions or decorations.
