Sadler's Wells Theatre

Founded in 1931 by Lilian Baylis of the Old Vic this F G M Chancellor-designed theatre stands on the site of a healing well discovered in 1683 in the grounds belonging to Mr Thomas Sadler. The original wooden structure was used for concerts until almost 100 years later it gave way to a stone-constructed theatre. During the 1840's and 1850's almost all of Shakespeare's plays were produced, until almost derelict it became a skating rink and prize-fighting venue in 1862, and was finally closed for repairs in 1878. Following its reopening crude melodramas became the staple productions until Lilian Baylis came to the rescue. Although now synonymous with the world of ballet, in the early days ballet was alternated with drama and opera, and this mix continues to the present time. Apart from a time during the Second World War when the theatre was closed due to bomb damage, it has hosted many of the great names of ballet, including Alicia Markova, Anton Dolin, Margot Fonteyn, and Robert Helpmann; and of opera, including Amy Shuard, Donald McIntyre and Rita Hunter.
