Whitehall Theatre

Designed in 1930 by Edward Stone for the playwright Walter Hackett, the Whitehall was associated with farce for many years. During the years of the Second World War, Phyllis Dixey the West End's first stripper, starred in the Whitehall Follies which ran continuously every day from 2pm to 9pm. Between 1944 and 1967 Brian Rix presented and starred in a number of productions which became known as the Whitehall Farces. In 1974 the theatre became a museum specialising in memorabilia from the two world wars but, following extensive refurbishment, reverted to live entertainment again in 1985. Since then the tradition of comedy and farce has been maintained.
