Wimbledon Common

Wimbledon & Putney Commons comprise about 1,140 acres of countryside, with Putney Lower Common separated by about one and a half miles from the rest. They consist of woodland, scrubland, heathland and mown recreation areas - and have ten ponds. They are the home of a wide variety of bird, animal and plant life. Being unfenced Commons, the whole area is open to the public 24 hours a day throughout the year. On an average summer weekend there are some 10,000 visitors and users of the Commons. The dedication of Sir Henry Peek, who was instrumental in the passing of the 1871 Act ensured the freedom of The Commons. The Windmill Museum, set up after the building was restored in 1976, is open to the public from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays and public holidays, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays from April to October. Contact the Curator, N. Plastow tel 020 8947 2825 for further information. Wimbledon Common is perhaps most famous for being the home of the television character "The Wombles".
