Sir John Soane's Museun

The architect Sir John Soane rebuilt 12 Lincoln’s Field Inns between 1792 – 1794, followed by the rebuilding of No. 13 between 1808 – 1812 and lastly he reconstructed No. 14 during 1823- 1824. This was done not only as a place in which to live but also as a place in which to preserve and display his private collection of works of art. These include his books, casts, paintings, and other material. Four years prior to his death he arranged with the government that his properties at Lincoln’s Fields Inn would be preserved for the benefit of ‘ amateurs and students’ in architecture, painting and sculpture. He died in 1837 and since then whilst much of the interior of his properties have remained as they were when he died some changes have been made. On view are paintings by Hogarth, Canaletto, cartoons by Raphael, and many other pieces of the time. There is a museum tour each Saturday at 2.30pm, tickets are on sale from 2.00pm and cost £3. At other times admission is free.
