Founded in 1768, the Royal Academy of Arts has been housed in Burlington House since 1873. It is Britain’s oldest fine arts institution attracting over one million visitors each year. The library which is an important source of research has more than 45000 books and manuscripts as well as a photographic collection. Among the works on display in the Academy’s permanent collection are items dating from the 18th century and includes paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings and memorabilia. The Academy holds an annual Summer Exhibition which was first held in 1769 and contained 136 works by 57 artists; today there are some 1000 exhibits from about 5000 artists.
