Wesley's Chapel and House and Museum of Methodism

This is situated next door to the house where John Wesley lived from 1778 until his death in 1791. In 1777 he laid the foundation stone of his chapel which opened for worship in 1778. The chapel was damaged by fire and restoration work was carried out in 1880. Having remained virtually intact even throughout the Second World War, it unfortunately had gone into such a state of disrepair that in 1972 it was closed. However it was in 1978 restored to its original state and is now properly looked after. Objects that survived the centuries are Wesley’s pulpit and communion table. In the crypt is the Museum of Methodism. A monument to Wesley has been erected in the churchyard above the vault where he was buried. Both the house and chapel which together contain much oh his furniture and personal items are open to the public. There is no admission charge on Sundays.
