London Eye

Constructed in 1999 it was opened to the public in 2000 some 3 or 4 months behind schedule due to technical and other difficulties in raising it from its horizontal position jutting out across part of the Thames. It stands an impressive 135 metres (450 feet) high and as such is London’s fourth tallest structure and the world’s tallest observation wheel. It is designed to carry 800 passengers in its 32 pods who will enjoy a spectacular and thrilling view of London stretching to about 25 miles on a clear day/night. The wheel takes about half an hour to complete one revolution. It was designed by David Marks and Julia Barfield. Although it is by far the biggest wheel built it weighs 1600 tonnes compared to the 4500 tonnes of the 80.5 metre high wheel designed and built by Mr. Ferris back in 1893 for the Chicago Exposition. The wheel is open daily. An admission charge is payable. Booking at least 5 days in advance is strongly recommended as this is a very popular attraction.
