Gielgud Theatre

Designed by W G R Sprague in 1906 this classical Edwardian domed structure has undergone three name changes. Originally known as the Hicks, the name was changed in 1909 to the Globe. Although a name synonymous with Shakespeare his plays have rarely been performed here. In 1995 it was given its present name in honour of Sir John Gielgud who first appeared here in 1939 as director and star of The Importance Of Being Ernest. Over time the theatre has developed a reputation for a mix of comedies and drama.
