Petticoat Lane

This market is actually situated in Middlesex Street although its name seems to have derived from the petticoats that were among the many items of clothing sold here back in 19th century. This area was settled by Jewish immigrants in the 19th century but there has been a diverse range of traders dating back to its beginnings. It has long been famous for its market of second-hand clothes from those of the well-off to the tattered garments of the indigent and is also known for its selling of shoes and leather goods. There is something in the region of 1,000 stalls on a Sunday and it is always packed with visitors even when the weather is not so good. One of the oldest markets in London, Ben Johnson wrote in 1616 commenting on the miles of clothing. Bargains are still to be had on a great range of high street fashions.
